cinematic threshold2022

My theoretical work investigates the interrelation of cinema and architecture in a multilayered manner. The main goal is to seek the relation between these two notions, both in physical and metaphysical space, and its connection with the body. The theory is based on Walter Benjamin's concept of 'aura.' Benjamin claims that inhabitation generates a limited perception of space. This research offers a formula that combines promenade architecture and cinematic techniques to broaden the perception of space, body, and mind. These techniques are investigated under three levels: framing, sequence, and montage. To clarify the formulation, it can be defined as: activated by the notion of movement, supported by frames such as windows and circulate around montage.

Extended Cinematic Threshold

My artistic research is investigating the cinematic promenade formula and extends a threshold that seeks the borders of spaces, real and metaphysical world. The aim is to form a critical distance between body and space so that the spectator can perceive the space with its aura. The threshold can usually be defined as a start or an endpoint. The threshold in architecture links itself to the idea that there is an existing duality. There must be a space before and after the threshold, point A and point B.  What has been researched is to investigate if the cinematic promenade formula extends this one-second experience and turns the threshold into a threshold space which produces the space C between A and B. The project took place in a corridor which is in the Lab of Artez, located in Zwolle. In the physical realm, the formula has been applied with frames, their sequence, and how it is montaged. Each frame is designed with a different angle and a rotation followed by a sequence of mirrors, to understand the relativeness of reality. In the middle of the corridor, a mirror wall and frame is montaged into the space to create two different spaces. This allows spectators to experience two different spaces with different qualities. In Space A the main tool for the metaphysical world is the mirror. In Space B, video projection to the designed elements which consist of time lags and different light sequences has been tested. As a threshold condition, the experience is primarily subjective but extended and the observer is in multiple thresholds with each step, emphasizing how each space is connected to each in various layers.
